Library Quick Tips for Middle School

Call or email any questions to Matthew Wittmer, Head Librarian

My Documents
-Buckley provides you with internet accessible storage space called a “My Documents” folder.  Keep your electronic school documents there, that way you can access them from any computer that has internet access. On any school computer, the “My Documents” folder is an icon on the desktop.  From any computer off campus (or your own mobile device), just go to:
 www.buckley.org/mydocuments
-log in (it will say "File Way")
--simply click on the folder with your name and use the “upload” or “download” buttons
to save or retrieve any files you want to store or access there.

The Middle & Upper School Library Web Page
-Go to: www.buckley.org
--Hover your mouse over the word “Curriculum” and select “Middle and Upper School Library” – you’re there!

Ebrary – Buckley’s Electronic Books
Ebrary is a collection of over 75,000 scanned books you can access every page of from any computer with internet access.  It is primarily non-fiction.  You can create an account in ebrary to customize and make your own “bookshelf” of books for projects.  Get to ebrary by clicking on the “ebooks” icon on the library web page, then you’ll see the red “ebrary” link. Click on the ebrary link from the Buckley Library web page for access.

Databases – Research Resources
Buckley subscribes to several online searchable databases specific to our main subjects.  You can access these behind the subject buttons on the library web page.  Several are “EBSCO databases” meaning Ebsco is the company that provides the data.  While each of the Ebsco databases look the same, they search different material and they enable you to refine your searches more than a Google search.  Try them out.  Some we have include:
-Newspaper Source (behind all subject buttons)
-History Reference Center  (behind the Social Studies button)
-Literary Reference Center (behind the English button)
-Science Reference Center (behind the Science button)
-Magazine Article Summaries (MAS-Ultra - behind all subject buttons)

Online “Destiny” Catalog
Use this to find print books in Buckley and other Independent School Libraries.  To access the catalog, scroll down on the library web page and click on the “online catalog” icon.
From there you can do keyword searches.  If you want to see what other schools have books (when we do not have any or if you want more) simply click on the “OneSearch” tab after you perform a search.
That will show you the list of books other schools have.  To see what each school has, click on the blue “Destiny” word
by the school name and you’ll get a drop down list.

Tips:
-Save documents when you create them, and, hit “save” often as you work.
-Never open a word document attached to an email and start working on it without saving it somewhere first.
-Save documents in your “my documents” folder vs. emailing them to yourself.
